SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – On a day that CSU Bakersfield head coach Nicole Van Dyke played a wide range of players looking toward next season, Cal Poly shut down the Roadrunner attack and eventually scored a late goal to take a 1-0 decision at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Van Dyke used 20 different players to take a look at some of her younger talent in the Roadrunners' penultimate matchup against a quality Cal Poly side. Despite the loss, Van Dyke liked what she saw.
“This game gave us a great chance to play a lot of young kids and look at some things for next season,” Van Dyke said. “We have some good players that will be able to step up next season that didn't get too many opportunities to play a lot of minutes this season.”
CSUB put together a quality defensive effort on Sunday against a Cal Poly team that has now own three in a row in improving its season record to 9-9-1. Despite the Mustangs putting together 12 shots, Cal Poly was only able to manage two shots on goal, leaving a fairly simple afternoon for CSUB goalkeeper Kym Gause, who made one save in the loss.
The problem for the Roadrunners came in the 75th minute when Haley Walker scored the lone goal of the match. Walker cleared space in front of the CSUB net with her back to Gause, then turned a fired shot into the left side of the goal from 18 yards out. But beside that one piece of individual brilliance from Walker, the CSUB held Cal Poly in check.
But the Roadrunners were simply unable to move anything forward offensively. CSUB was held without a shot in the match.
CSUB will conclude its 2010 season next Sunday when the Roadrunners travel to the Pacific Northwest to take on Seattle University at 2 p.m.
