Allen?s Buzzer Beater Vaults Roadrunners Over Mustangs

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Senor Phynique Allen (San Diego, Calif./Eastern Washington) hit the game–winning layup as time expired Saturday evening, giving the CSUB women's basketball team an 83–81 victory over Cal Poly in the Icardo Center. The Mustangs (13–7) tied the game with seven seconds remaining but Allen drove the length of the court to score the winning bucket for the Roadrunners (13–9) as the buzzer sounded.

Allen recorded her second double–double of the season as she tied a career–best with 10 assists to go along with 20 points. More importantly, Allen did not tally a turnover as CSUB committed a season–low five turnovers on the evening. Leading the offensive charge was freshman Amber Williams (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda HS) who dialed up six three pointers and finished with 22 points. Senior Katie Williams (Las Vegas/Reedley College) had 14 points and two blocked shots. Senior Kelley Tarver (Valencia HS) had 12 points, hitting three big long range bombs. A strong performance off the bench was turned in by junior Nikki Leon (Canyon Country HS) who tied a career–high with a trio of three–pointers to finish with 11 points in 27 valuable minutes. She also tied Katie Williams for the team–high with seven rebounds, four coming on the offensive boards.

Kristina Santiago, Cal Poly and the Big West's leading scorer, scored 22 points in just 22 minutes. Rachel Clancy had a game–high 24 points for the Mustangs.

In the first half, the entire focus of the game changed in the first three minutes as Poly's Santiago picked up two fouls, relegating her to the bench. Eight minutes later, Katie Williams picked up her third foul and also headed to the bench leaving each team without their top scorers for almost half of the opening stanza. CSUB fell down by 11 points midway through as the Roadrunners just couldn't seem to hit a three, missing seven of their first eight attempts from deep. But a late half run pushed the 'Runners back to within two as the teams headed for the halftime break.

Cal Poly pushed the lead back out to nine points to start the second half as Santiago returned to score six quick points in just under two minutes. But a 15–7 run pulled CSUB back to within one, 54–53, with 14:40 left to play.

Late in the half, Katie Williams hit a jumper to give the Roadrunners a 77–67 advantage. But Poly would push back as Clancy hit a driving layup and drew a foul. The ensuing free–throw make brought the game to within four, 81–77, with 42 seconds to play. Both Amber and Katie Williams would go to the line but neither were able to hit the front end of the one–and–one. Clancy would hit another layup and the Mustangs would foul Tarver with just 15 seconds remaining. Tarver's shot, however, would not fall and Cal Poly drove up the court and ended with a Clancy jumper to tie the game, 81–81. Allen got the in bounds pass for the Roadrunners and drove the length of the court to score the game–winning, buzzer–beating layup.

Up next, Oregon State will be the first Pac–10 to visit the Icardo Center as the Beavers take on the Roadrunners at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
