NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Freshman Amber Williams (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda HS) set a school record with eight three pointers as the CSUB women's basketball team ran away from the Cal State Northridge Matadors, 91–71, Monday evening at the Matadome. Williams finished with a career–high 24 points on 8–of–13 shooting, all three pointers, as CSUB moved to 9–8 while Northridge falls to 2–11.
Senior Phynique Allen (San Diego, Calif./Eastern Washington) had 17 points and a team–best eight assists. Senior Katie Williams (Las Vegas/Reedley College) scored 12 points with five steals in 22 minutes of action. Junior Nikki Leon (Canyon Country HS) had 10 points off the bench.
For the 16th time in CSUB's 17 games, the Roadrunner defense forced at least 20 turnovers, causing 21 Matador miscues on the night which were turned into 34 points. The 'Runners led from start to finish. CSUB outscored Northridge's bench, 25–13, and held an 18–2 advantage in fast break points.
The Roadrunners jumped to an early 19–4 lead in the first half, fueled by Amber Williams' sharp deep shooting. Katie Williams added five first half steals as CSUB took a 53–28 lead into the locker room. The 53 points tied the team's season–high, previously set back on Nov. 21, 2009, against Hawaii and the 25–point halftime advantage was the largest cushion of the year.
In the second half, the 'Runners pushed the lead to 32 points, 71–39, midway through the half as Allen connected on a jump shot. Northridge outscored the Roadrunners, 43–38, in the second half but the first half cushion never brought the Matadors within any true striking distance.
CSUB returns to the Icardo Center on Saturday, Jan. 16, to face the Seattle Redhawks at 7 p.m.
