CORVALLIS, Ore. — The CSUB men's soccer team surrendered a pair of early goals and never recovered in a 4-0 loss to Oregon State in the final match of the OSU/Nike Challenge Sunday.
The Beavers' Danny Mwanga and Colin Mitchell scored just 30 seconds apart in the 15th minute, then each added a second goal in the second half as OSU improved to 2-0-0 on the season. Mwanga's goals were both unassisted, while Mitchell's first-half strike was a header off a cross from Brian Ramsey. Mitchell's second-half goal was also a header, but was unassisted as the Beaver midfielder was the first to a loose ball in the box.
“We gave up two really soft goals early and had a chance to make it 2-1 early in the second half, but couldn't convert,” said CSUB Head Coach Simon Tobin. “Danny (Mwanga) is one of the better offensive players on the West Coast and he got the better of our defense today.”
Just two days after recording a 3-0 shutout of Houston Baptist, the Roadrunners (1-2-0) struggled to build its attack against the Beavers, managing just four shots and one on goal.
Eric Shannon and Shane Ascheri split time in goal for CSUB. Shannon made one save against five Beaver shots in the first half, while Ascheri had three saves in the second half.
The Roadrunners return home this week for the first of nine home matches on the 2009 schedule. On Friday, CSUB hosts UC Riverside at 7 p.m., then takes on Saint Mary's Sunday with a 3 p.m. matinee kick-off.
