CORVALLIS, Ore. — The CSUB men's soccer team got offensive in its opening match at the OSU/Nike Challenge, blanking Houston Baptist, 3-0, Friday in Corvallis.
The Roadrunners' three-goals tied the highest scoring output for the squad since the move to Division I, and was the first time they accomplished the feat in regulation. The other time CSUB scored three goals was a 3-2 overtime victory against Cal State Fullerton during the 2008 season.
Bakersfield (1-1-0) used solid ball possession and combinations to create seven first-half shots resulting in a 2-0 lead at the break. Omar Heredia put the Roadrunners on the board in the 16th minute, taking a pass from Jesus Sanchez and slotting a shot past Houston Baptist (0-2-0) keeper Michael Bouchahine.
Four minutes later, Matt Shaxton scored his first goal of the season, beating Bouchahine one-on-one after receiving a ball from Mathijs Tabbers.
The 'Runners continued to press forward in the second half, breaking through a third time in the 67th minute. Sanchez was once again the CSUB set-up man, spitting the Huskies' defense with a through ball for Oscar Coppieters who scored for the second time in two matches.
“All three goals were very similar,” said CSUB Head Coach Simon Tobin. “They were all results of keeping the ball on the floor, splitting the defense and timely runs. It was also really good for Chuy (Sanchez), our freshman midfielder, to contribute on two goals.”
Freshman goalkeeper Eric Shannon earned the first shutout of his young career, making one save on three Houston Baptist shots. Bakersfield finished the match with a 13-3 shot advantage.
The 'Runners conclude play in the OSU/Nike Challenge Sunday taking on the host Oregon State Beavers at 1:30 p.m.
