Late Goal Sinks Roadrunners Against Hawaii, 2?1

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
A strike from the Rainbow Wahine in the 84th minute broke a 1–1 tie as the CSUB women's soccer team fell to the University of Hawaii, 2–1, Sunday evening on the Main Soccer Field. The win moves Hawaii to 2–6–1 on the season while the Roadrunner drop to 4–6–0.

Hawaii held a 12–6 shot advantage over the 'Runners. Each team earned a pair of corner kicks but the Roadrunner offense was again hampered by six offsides calls to the Rainbow Wahine's one.

The lone goal in the opening half came in the 16th minute from Hawaii's Kristyn Shapka. Shapka took a pass up along the sideline from Mari Punzal and lifted a shot that at first glance, looked to be a cross. But the ball kept carrying and goalkeeper Kym Gause (Manteca/Modesto JC) was unable to reach it as it sailed just inside the far post.

The Roadrunners' best scoring opportunity came later in the half as sophomore Kassi Massey (Bakersfield/Stockdale HS) got free in the box. She fired a shot to the far post but Hawaii goalkeeper Kanani Taaca made a great diving save to her left to keep the lead. On the other end of the field, Gause made a couple of brilliant saves to keep CSUB in the game. On a shot that look destined to sneak inside the near post, Gause jumped and got just enough to keep it out. She then hurried and kept the ball from going off the endline after the rebound.

CSUB came out of the halftime break with a new fire and immediately pushed forward, attacking Hawaii's defense. The 'Runners were rewarded as junior midfielder Alexandria Ngo (Sacramento/Sacramento State) found Massy with a through ball. Massey's speed helped her beat a diving Taaca to the ball and calmly touched the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

A dangerous free kick late in the half set up a scramble in front of the net. Hawaii's Britta Bourne handled the bouncing ball in the box and got off a weak shot to the open end of the goal. However, the ball just did not have enough juice on it and Gause was able to cover it up before it crossed the goal line.

But Bourne would get another chance in the 84th minute as defender Chelsea Deptula played a long ball into her. Bourne was able to get past the defense and Gause for the go ahead goal.

The 'Runners had few chances with time winding down but each time were cleared away by the UH defense.

Gause finished with five saves on the evening while Taaca had two for Hawaii.

CSUB takes to the road for its next five games beginning on Sunday, Sept. 27, at Loyola Marymount. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
