Freshmen Star in Shutout of Appalachian State

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Robbie Gouk put CSUB on the board early and Kory Kindle added an insurance goal late as the Roadrunner men's soccer team posted a 2-0 shutout of Appalachian State Sunday. The win gave CSUB a 1-1 split at the UNC Charlotte/Nike Invitational and moves the squad to 3-3-1 overall.

The Roadrunners made good on their very fist shot opportunity of the day as Gouk found the back of the net just beyond the six minute mark. Kindle sent a ball in to Gouk right in front of the goalmouth. From six yards out, Gouk touched it past Mountaineers' goalkeeper Drake Branson for a 1-0 CSUB lead.

Bakersfield continued to dominate the half, posting a 5-1 shot advantage, but settled for the slim one-goal advantage at the break. In the second half, the 'Runners continued to press forward, accumulating five corner kicks and nine total shots.

In the 75th minute Kindle tallied his first collegiate goal and making it a 2-0 Roadrunner lead. Ernesto Hinojosa began the play by working the ball to the endline, then cutting it back with a cross to Kindle just inside the top of the goal box. Kindle then struck the ball into the right corner of the net.

CSUB's defense withstood a late Appalachian State (2-4-1) push that included four shots in the final 11 minutes for its second shutout of the season.

In goal, freshman Eric Shannon claimed his second collegiate shutout, while also making a pair of saves.

“The best players on the field for us were Eric, Kory, Ernesto and Jesus,” said CSUB Head Coach Simon Tobin. “For our freshmen to have the most consistent play all weekend, and show that they can play with teams like Charlotte, is very good for our program.”

The Roadrunners return to Bakersfield for a three-match homestand, beginning with a 7 p.m. match-up against Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Sept. 27. They will also face Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly at home before opening Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at UNLV on Oct. 16.
