CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Outmatched by a bigger, stronger and faster UNC Charlotte side, the Roadrunner men's soccer team fell 4-0 in the their first match of the UNCC/Nike Invitational Friday.
“They (UNC Charlotte) are on the level of UCLA and UC Santa Barbara,” said CSUB Head Coach Simon Tobin. “They will be in the mix to compete for the College Cup this year.”
Charlotte's Issac Caughran, Jason Jawes and Josh Norwood each tallied their first goal of the season and Evan James added his third strike of the year as the 49er's improved to 3-1-1.
The Roadrunners earned seven corner kicks and had nine shots in the match, but despite solid play by the young side, were unable to find the back of the net.
Tobin credited freshmen Kory Kindle, Ernesto Hinojosa and Jesus Sanchez for their standout play. Kindle and Hinojosa came off the bench to combine for three shots, two on goal, while Sanchez made his presence known in the central midfield.
Eric Shannon made four saves in goal for CSUB in the first half, while Shane Ascheri had a pair of saves during his second-half duties.
