Pair of First Half Goals Hold as Gauchos Beat Roadrunners

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -  Two first half goals by UC Santa Barbara held up as the Gauchos beat the CSUB women's soccer team, 2–0, Thursday evening on the Main Soccer Field. The loss moves the Roadrunners' record to 4–5–0 for the season while Santa Barbara improves to 3–4–1. The home loss was just the second of the season for CSUB, which now sports a 4–2 record at the Main Soccer Field.

In the 27th minute, UCSB's Jacqui Simon one touched a cross from Kylie McDonald into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. A little over 11 minutes later, Erin Ortega played a through ball to Victoria Thomas who out ran the Roadrunner defense and beat CSUB goalkeeper Kym Gause (Manteca/Modesto JC) to the far post.

UCSB outshot the Roadrunners 16–8. The Gauchos also held a 6–2 advantage in corner kicks and a 14–10 edge in fouls. Gause finished with five saves for the 'Runners while Tammy Lenham had four for UCSB.

“I thought we were able to put them under a bit of pressure in the second half and maybe could have gotten one back,” Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke said. “But all the credit to Santa Barbara. They are a good team and they scored two good goals. We worked hard the entire game and we will use that to propel us into Sunday's contest against Hawaii.”

Youth Soccer Day at the field brought in a season's best crowd of 432 for Thursday's contest. Kids in eighth grade or under received free admission if they wore a youth soccer jersey. There was a halftime dance competition and youth soccer game. One lucky youth player walked away with a signed CSUB women's soccer poster while two others received signed CSUB women's soccer jerseys.

CSUB returns to the Main Soccer Field on Sunday evening as the Roadrunners take on the University of Hawaii at 7 p.m. For ticket information, call (661) 654–BLUE!
