Gause Stops Seven; CSUB Falls to UNLV, 2?1

LAS VEGAS
-  Freshman Raquel Gervas (Upland HS) scored on a penalty kick in the 89th minute but the CSUB women's soccer team fell to UNLV, 2–1, on Sunday afternoon at the UNLV Nike Classic. For Gervas, it was her second goal of the season, both coming on penalty kicks. The loss drops the Roadrunners to an even 2–2 for the season while the Rebels improve to 1–1–1. UNLV outshot CSUB, 15–4, and earned 10 corner kicks to the Roadrunners' one which came in the final minute, leading to the Gervas penalty kick.

Sophomore Kym Gause (Manteca/Modesto JC) had a season–high seven saves in goal for the 'Runners.

In the first half, the team's remained even until Jamie McCoy scored in the 37th minute to give UNLV a 1-0 advantage. McCoy took a breakaway pass from Danielle O'Neil and put a shot to the left post. UNLV held a 5-2 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes and Gause made four saves.

The Rebels would add another goal in the 69th minute as Shannon Hughes scored on a corner kick, extending the lead to 2-0.

In the 89th minute, a hand ball was called in the box, leading to a last–minute penalty kick. Gervas again was elected to take the shot and the first year player buried it in the back of the net. Her first goal was also a penalty kick, a strike that tied the game in CSUB's upset victory over then–No. 13 San Diego.

“It's always tough to win on the road against a team that is searching for its first win,” said Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke. “I thought our captain Alexandria Ngo and Kassi Massey played extremely hard throught the game. We just need to continue to improve and are looking forward to playing at home next weekend.”

CSUB will return to Bakersfield for a weekend series beginning on Friday, Sept. 4, as the 'Runners take on UC Davis on Friday and then host Cal Poly on Sunday. Both game times are scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Main Soccer Field. For ticket information, call (661) 654-BLUE.
