BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? Thomas Kimbrell and Elijah Nacita joined 71 wrestlers from across the country as members of the 2009 National Wrestling Coaches Association NCAA Division I Individual All-Academic team, while the Roadrunner team was honored in the annual Division I All-Academic Top 30 Team, the association announced Thursday.
Kimbrell was named to the All-Academic team for a second consecutive season. A senior political science major carrying a 3.73 GPA, Kimbrell also had his most successful season on the mat, placing fourth at the Pac-10 Championships and earning a bid to the NCAA National Championships.
Nacita earned his first NWCA All-Academic honor by carrying a 3.31 GPA as a business administration major. The sophomore claimed the Pac-10 Championship title at 141 lbs., earned his first trip to the National Championships and finished the season with a team-best 33 wins.
The Roadrunner team posted a 3.00 GPA to place 19th in the All-Academic Top 30 team listing. American University led the team standings for a second consecutive year, posting a 3.28 GPA. Harvard and Stanford followed in second and third with team GPA's of 3.258 ad 3.257, respectively.
For teams to be eligible for consideration, the team GPA was comprised of 12 student-athletes, including the 10 wrestlers who were entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. Individually, wrestlers must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule ? and must have competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule ? or have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and have been an NCAA All-American.
