BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? Junior pitcher Shawna Truan tossed a four-hitter and senior outfielder Nette Puente had two hits in the final home game of her collegiate career to lead the CSUB Softball team to a 4-1 win over the University of South Dakota Sunday afternoon at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
Truan faced just four batters over the minimum to pick up her eighth win of the season. Her offense provided her ample support, scoring in each of the first three innings. Fittingly, CSUB's final run came on an RBI single from Puente, the lone senior on the 2009 roster, who was honored in a ceremony following the win.
Truan didn't allow a hit until Callie Roan singled down the leftfield line to open the fourth inning. She did not allow a runner to reach second base until the sixth inning, when the Coyotes scored for the first time in the three-game series on a two-out single from Alexa Rudeen.
CSUB loaded the bases with one out in the first inning, but managed just one run when Jill McClelland scored on a throwing error. The 'Runners added the insurance run they would need in the second when Kelli Bailey hit a fly ball to deep right that brought home Heather Veitch from third base.
Junior catcher Jaimey Kleinsmith homered for the second consecutive day, driving the first pitch of the third inning over the fence in leftcenter. Singles from Danielle Lyman, Stefanie Frei and Veitch set the table for Puente, who blooped a single to center to bring home Frei with CSUB's final run.
CSUB (22-20) will close the season on the road. The 'Runners will be off until Apr. 15 when they head to San Diego for a doubleheader against future Pacific Coast Softball Conference foe the University of San Diego. The 'Runners will head to Texas for a three-game set at UT-San Antonio before closing the season at the NCAA Division I Independent Championships in Greeley, Colo.
South Dakota (20-13) continues its five-game California trip Monday with a doubleheader at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
