ST. LOUIS ? Brandon Halsey (197 lbs.) secured CSUB's first wrestling All-American since 2005 and the 43rd all-time with a victory over Old Dominion's Jesse Strawn Friday evening in the consolation sixth round of the 2009 NCAA Division I National Championships at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
In 2005 Bakersfield had a pair of All-Americans in the form of Efren Ceballos and Matt Sanchez, who placed fifth at 125 and 133, respectively.
“We told (Brandon) coming in that we wanted him to be the 43rd All-American for the program,” said CSUB Head Coach T.J. Kerr. “This is a big deal for him, a big deal for the program and with him being the first All-American in his family, it's a big deal for them too.”
Bouncing back from a quarterfinals loss to No. 2 Jake Varner, Halsey dominated Strawn from start to finish in the 14-3 major decision win. Determined from the opening whistle, Halsey shot 14 seconds in, scoring on a takedown and three-point nearfall before letting Straw go for a 5-1 lead.
Halsey opened the second period with a reversal, and after a Strawn escape, he added a takedown for a 9-2 advantage. In the third, Strawn chose the top position, and paid for it, as Halsey scored another quick reversal, then later added a takedown and 2:44 of riding time for the final 11-point margin.
In his second match of the night, Halsey drew a rematch of his Pac-10 Championship final opponent, Brent Chriswell of Boise State. In another low-scoring affair, Chriswell was once again able to come out on top, using a second-period escape and a third-period takedown to hold on for a 3-2 win.
Halsey will now conclude his collegiate career by complete in the seventh-place match Saturday morning. With a current 23-5 record, Halsey faces Cornell's Cam Simaz in the match.
Saturday's morning session, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Central Standard Time, will be broadcast live on ESPNU, while live stats can continue to be found on ncaa.com and intermatwrestle.com.
Notes...Brandon Halsey's eldest brother Lionel was a three time NCAA qualifier from 1998-2000 for the Roadrunners...had six wins at the NCAA's, but never achieved All-American status...middle brother Ryan Halsey, also currently an assistant coach for CSUB, was a four-time NCAA qualifier for Cal Poly, but also never reached All-American status.
