Halsey Advances to Quarterfinals, Four Total 'Runners Alive At NCAA's

ST. LOUIS ? CSUB senior Brandon Halsey pinned Maryland's Hudson Taylor in the second round of championship action Thursday, advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2009 NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships. In all, four of six Roadrunner qualifiers remain alive headed into Friday's third session of action.

As a team, Bakersfield is tied for 29 with nine points. Iowa and Iowa State are tied for first with 33 points apiece.

Halsey made quick work of Taylor, pinning the No. 10 seed just 40 seconds into the match.  After a quick scramble and a reset to the center after a stalemate, Halsey shot at Taylor, pulling his shoulders to the mat for fall victory.

Now one victory away from securing All-American status, Halsey, the No. 7 seed, faces No. 2 seed Jake Varner of Iowa State in Friday morning's quarterfinals.

At heavyweight, Mitch Monteiro was forced to fight from behind from the beginning against No. 11 Zachery Rey of Lehigh. Rey took a 2-0 lead just over a minute into the match on a takedown. Monteiro cut the deficit in half with an escape, ending the first period down 2-1.

After a scoreless second period, Rey cut Monteiro loose to begin the third, tying the score 2-2. Neither wrestler was able to score points in the period, forcing the sudden victory overtime. With eight seconds remaining, Rey scored the match-winning takedown, putting Monteiro in the consolation bracket against East Stroudsburg's Christopher Birchler Friday morning.

In the consolation bracket, Brandon Zoetewey (125 lbs.) bounced back his morning loss to claim an 11-6 win over Chattanooga's Demetrius Johnson. Down 2-1 after one period of action, Zoetewey turned the tide in his own favor, opening the second with a three-point nearfall and scoring four points in the third with an escape, two-point nearfall and riding time. Zoetewey will take on Wyoming's Michael Martinez Friday morning.

Thomas Kimbrell (133 lbs.) kept his collegiate career alive with a 5-2 win over Lehigh's Matt Fisk. The two met at the Las Vegas Invitational earlier in the season with Kimbrell earning a 5-4 decision. This time around, Kimbrell scored back-to-back takedowns to carry a 4-2 lead through one period.

Neither wrestler scored a point through the remainder of the match and Kimbrell earned his final point for riding time. Kimbrell will look to stay alive against Bucknell's David Marble. The two wrestlers met earlier this season at the Las Vegas Invite where Marble claimed a 4-2 win.

Monteiro, Zoetewey and Kimbrell all need three consecutive victories in their respective consolation brackets to reach All-American status.

Elijah Nacita (141 lbs.) closed out his sophomore season and his first NCAA appearance with an 11-6 decision loss to Virginia Tech's Christopher Diaz. Four of Nacita's points came from escapes, the other two from a takedown in the third period as the Bakersfield native was never able to get on the offensive against Diaz. Nacita finished the year with a team-best 33 wins to go with 13 losses.

Fellow sophomore Riley Orozco (184 lbs.) also fell in his second match of the day, a 16-1 technical fall against No. 5 Dustin Kilgore of Kent State. Orozco ends his season with a 27-13 overall record.

Friday's morning session gets underway at 10 a.m. Central Standard Time. Quarterfinal matches will be broadcast live on ESPNU HD and ESPN 360.com. Live scoring for all matches can be found online at ncaa.com and intermatwrestle.com.
