ST. LOUIS ? CSUB's No. 6 seed Mitch Monteiro (HWT) and No. 7 Brandon Halsey (197 lbs.) both won their first round matches Thursday morning at the 2009 NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The Roadrunner wrestlers move on to the championship second round matches, to be wrestled in Thursday evening's session, beginning at 6:30 p.m., Central Time.

Monteiro's match against Edinboro's Joe Fendone featured little action, but the CSUB junior scored when necessary, collecting two points in the second period on a reversal. Monteiro started in the down position in the period, then fought on top 30 seconds in.

Also down in the third period, Monteiro was unable to escape, but Fendone could do no more than ride the period out and collect one riding time point.

Halsey dominated his first round match against Buffalo's James Hamel from the get-go, scoring a takedown less than 30 seconds in. After a Hamel escape, Halsey scored one more takedown and took a 4-2 lead in to the second period.

Hamel chose the down position in the second, but Halsey rode out his opponent for the entire two minutes. In the third, Halsey escaped quickly to increase his lead to 5-2, then scored on a third takedown and riding time for the 8-3 win.

Bakersfield's four unseeded wrestlers suffered disappointing results Thursday morning, all dropping their first round matches, but will have chance to bounce back tonight in the consolation wrestlebacks.

Brandon Zoetewey (125 lbs.) scored the first points of his opening bout against No. 10 Scott Sentes of Central Michigan, a takedown two minutes into the first round. But Sentes scored a reversal to tie the score 2-2. An escape by Zoetewey to open the second period put the CSUB senior up 3-2, but Sentes scored two unanswered takedowns and a penalty point to claim a 7-3 win.

Thomas Kimbrell (133 lbs.) opened action against No. 8, and undefeated Joe Baker of Navy. Baker took a 2-0 lead in the first with a takedown. Then, after a scoreless second period, the senior added an escape, takedown and riding time to defeat Kimbrell 6-0.

Elijah Nacita (141 lbs.) was forced to go on the defensive early after Virginia's Nick Nelson scored a quick takedown and three-point nearfall, putting the Roadrunners sophomore in a 5-0 hole through one period. Little action took place after than as Nelson added a takedown in the second and collected his eighth point from riding time for the 8-0 major decision.

Riley Orozco (184 lbs.) took on No. 12 Vince Jones of Nebraska in the opening round, and little action in the first period led to a 0-0 tie headed into the second. Orozco deferred choice of position and Jones chose down. Orozco retained top position for nearly a minute, but Jones was able to score a two-point reversal, then caught Orozco on his back and was able to secure the fall victory at 4:15.
