BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB women's swimming and diving team closed out the 2008-09 regular season with a big 115.5-102.5 dual win over visiting Loyola Marymount Saturday at the Hillman Aquatics Center.
“This was a great step up before conference championships,” said Roadrunner Head Coach Pat Skehan. “We had a lot of people swim really fast and we were also a good team today. This was one of the best team efforts we've had in the past few years.”
The day started with a wire-to-wrie race in he 200 yard medley relay, which the Lions won in 1:52.86, just .01 seconds faster than CSUB's time of 1:52.87.
Leah Felber was the Roadrunners' top finisher in the 500 free, placing third in 5:23.93. Freshman Rachel McCall led the pack in the 50 free with a top time of 25.07. Tessa Brown tied for third in the event, touching in 25.66.
Stephanie Donnelly had a big day with first place finishes in both the 200 individual medley (2:15.12) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.92). In the 200 IM, Lacey Payne turned in a season best time of 2:21.09 for a third place finish.
Both Lexi Kelly and Payne swam season best times in the 100 fly, with Kelly placing third in 1:01.76 and Payne placing sixth in 1:03.52.
McCall scored another first place finish for the ?Runners, clocking a 54.19 in the 100 free, while Kelly was first in the 100 breast in a season best 1:10.01.
With no LMU divers to contend with, the CSUB trio of Victoria Kreutz, Hannah Yoder and Melanie Sloan added valuable points to the team total. Kreutz won both the one and three-meter springboard events, scoring 278.48 on the one-meter board and 260.25 on the three-meter board.
“Now we rest and fix a few details,” said Skehan of how the team will spend the upcoming weeks prior to the Conference USA Championships in Houston. “We will look at the conference meet and see how we can score points. Today was a real confidence builder headed into C-USA's.”
The Roadrunner women, along with the men's squad, heads to Houston for the C-USA Championships Feb. 25-28.
