LOS ANGELES - A big run surrounding halftime proved to the CSUB's undoing as Loyola Marymount broke the game open and held on for an 84-71 win Saturday afternoon in Gersten Pavilion.

CSUB (1-8 overall) started in a hole with big man Santwon Latunde (Landover, Md./Cowley County CC) playing limited minutes due to a lingering injury. Nevertheless, the Roadrunners got another 20-point effort from senior forward Trent Blakely (Alta Loma HS) and a season-high 17 from freshman guard Stephon Carter (Garces HS). Senior forward Jose Lara (Santa Paula/College of the Sequoias) matched his career high with seven points in just 15 minutes.

Sophomore guard Jarred DuBois, who torched CSUB for 39 points last season, led LMU (5-7) with game highs of 24 points and five assists.

The Roadrunners were within three points at 33-30 in the final minute of the first half before missing four consecutive free throws late. Those misses were critical in allowing LMU to extend its run around halftime to 27-7, stretching the narrow three-point Lion lead to a 60-37 advantage.

DuBois keyed the big Lion surge with a layup and three-pointer that sparked an 11-1 run in the 1:44 immediately surrounding halftime. He scored 14 points in the second half to help LMU build its lead to as many as 24 points.

To their credit, the 'Runners played hard until the end. They cut seven points off the lead in the final 2:32 and had good looks to get closer that simply wouldn't fall.

CSUB will meet its second consecutive West Coast Conference opponent Wednesday when it travels to meet San Francisco in War Memorial Gym. Tip-off is schedule for 5 p.m.
