Gaels Jump To Early Lead; Hold Off Late Roadrunner Charge

MORAGA, Calif. - Senior Phynique Allen (San Diego, Calif./Eastern Washington) scored a game-high 24 points Wednesday evening but the CSUB women's basketball team fell to the Saint Mary's College Gaels, 94-80, at McKeon Pavilion. The Gaels (8-4) led by as many as 40 points midway through the second half before the Roadrunners (4-6) cut the advantage down to the final margin of 14, closing on a 40-14 run.

Allen was one of four CSUB seniors to reach double-digits. Katie Williams (Las Vegas, Nev./Reedley College) extended her double-digit scoring streak to 27 consecutive games with a 15-point effort. Kelley Tarver (Valencia HS) had a season-high 17 points and Tiffany Belt (Bakersfield, Calif./West HS) added 10 points. The Roadrunner defense forced 34 SMC turnovers while committing just 15. CSUB has held a positive turnover margin every game this season.

Saint Mary's standout forward Louella Tomlinson had 13 points and added seven blocked shots, giving her a nation-best season total of 90. Tomlinson and Kate Gaze tied for the game-high with nine rebounds. The Gaels shot 50.8 percent from the field (32-for-63) and held a 56-25 rebound margin.

SMC led wire to wire, building a 28 point halftime advantage, 59-31. In the second half, the Gaels extended the advantage to 40 points with 12:51 remaining on a free throw from Kate Gaze. After that, however, CSUB went on a run to cut into the lead. Allen and Amber Williams helped spark a quick 18-5 run before Gaze drained a three pointer, bringing the score to 88-58. The Roadrunners would finish the game by scoring 22 of the final 28 points.

CSUB will take to the road again on Saturday as it participates in the USC Women of Troy Basketball Classic. The Roadrunners will face Delaware State on Saturday at 7 p.m. Then, the 'Runners will face either host USC or defending Ivy League Champion Dartmouth on Sunday, depending on the results of Saturday's contests.
