BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Utah State rode a 27-2 run midway through the first half to a 68-51 men's basketball win over CSUB Wednesday at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
USU's Tai Wesley recorded his first double-double of the season with a game-high 15 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler Newbold added 13 points.
CSUB (1-7 overall) led 9-7 six minutes into the game when Utah State (6-3) caught fire. The Aggies used an efficient offensive effort-they turned the ball just once in the first half-while making 11-of-21 from the field during their big run that turned the two-point deficit into a 34-11 lead that wouldn't be challenged.
The Roadrunners played better ball after the break, shooting 46 percent from the floor and turning it over just five times. But their solid second half resulted in just a 34-34 stalemate over the final 20 minutes.
Freshman guard Stephon Carter (Garces HS) scored nine points after the break to lead CSUB with 11. Senior forward Trent Blakley (Alta Loma HS) ran his double-digit scoring streak to 12 games with 10. The Roadrunners also got 10 rebounds from Santwon Latunde (Landover, Md./Cowley County CC) and five assists from Donavan Bragg (Inglewood/Serra HS).
CSUB will look to bounce back into the win column when it travels to Loyola Marymount for a Saturday matinee. Utah State concludes its two-game California trip Friday night at Long Beach State.
