SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Shooting performances were at the opposite end of the spectrum Sunday afternoon in the Thunderdome at UC Santa Barbara as the Roadrunner women's basketball team fell to the Gauchos, 79–51. CSUB shot just 29.3 percent (17-of-58) from the field while Santa Barbara was red hot, connecting on 32-of-54 chances (59.3 percent). The loss drops the 'Runners to 4–5 while UCSB improves to 3–5.
Senior Katie Williams (Las Vegas, Nev./Reedley College) extended her double–digit scoring streak to an impressive 26 consecutive contests as she led the Roadrunners with 15 points. Sophomore Jana Smith (Tehachapi HS) had eight points to go along with eight rebounds, a team–best. Senior Phynique Allen (San Diego, Calif./Eastern Washington), who battled foul trouble throughout the contest, finished with nine points.
The Gauchos controlled the first half, building a 45–20 advantage heading into the break. After the Roadrunners grabbed an early 9–7 advantage, UCSB went on a 17–3 run to seize control. Foul trouble limited Allen who picked accumulated three first–half whistles.
In the second half, CSUB would shoot better but the Gaucho lead was just too much to overcome.
UC Santa Barbara had a balanced attack as four players reached double figures led by Sweets Undeerwood and Emilie Johnson, each scoring 12. CSUB forced 21 Gaucho turnovers while committing 20. In every game this season, the 'Runners have held a positive turnover margin.
The Roadrunners will take a couple of days before heading to Moraga, Calif., to take on Saint Mary's College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16.
