SEATTLE — Thirty-one shots, 11 saves, five goals and three red cards were all part of an eventful Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in Seattle Sunday, but the CSUB men's soccer team came up just short, falling 3-2 to Seattle in the Roadrunners' season finale.
Bakersfield concludes the 2009 season with an 8-7-2 overall record and a 3-4-0 mark in the MPSF. With one match remaining, Seattle moved to 4-11-1 overall and concluded MPSF play with a 3-4-0 record.
The Roadrunners had the momentum to start the match, getting off a trio of shots in the opening 14 minutes of play. The first, by Matt Shaxton, sailed high and the second two, by Shaxton and Jesus Sanchez, were save by the Redhawks' Max Walker. As the period wound down, Seattle had three consecutive shot opportunities of their own, then took a 1-0 lead at the 38:32 mark on a goal by Ian Walsh.
Play got chippy in the final five minutes of the first half as Seattle's Kyle Peterman was issued a red card for an aggressive tackle. Just moments later, Walsh was issued the match's second red card, this one for language, followed by a red card for CSUB's Oscar Coppieters after an aggressive tackle.
Playing a man down to start the second half, Seattle struck again just five minutes in, this time on a goal by Elliot Richards. Ed Walugembe earned his second assist of the match, feeding Richards the ball for a shot from 10 yards out.
Undettered, Bakersfield countered and cut the deficit in half in the 58th minute when Evan Fassler took a pass from Jesus Sanchez and struck it into the far post net. Five minutes later, Sanchez collected a ball on a misclear and drove it back into the net, knotting the score, 2-2.
Despite a flurry of shots by the Roadrunners, looking for the go-ahead goal, it was Seattle's Sean Morris who finally broke the tie in the 77th minute off off a double assist by Wesley VanHooser and Will Banchero.
In goal, CSUB's Shane Ascheri earned his first start of the season, making one save and allowing one goal. Eric Shannon played between the posts in the second half, making six saves on 11 Redhawk shots.
