BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -– CSUB heavyweight Mitch Monteiro was named a late addition to the lineup at the 44th National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic Presented by the Wrestling Alumni – College of William & Mary, which takes place Sunday at Titan Gym on the campus of Cal State Fullerton.
Monteiro, a senior who earned a preseason ranking No. 6 from Intermat Wrestling, will face No. 2 David Zabriskie from Iowa State.
Monteiro is the first Roadrunner to be selected as an NWCA All-Star since Stephen Neal earned the honor in 1999. Neal was a three-time NWCA All-Star selection, and won all three bouts. CSUb has had 14 all-time selections to the event, and has lost just once.
“It is an honor to have one of our wrestlers in such an elite event where the top-ranked Division I wrestlers are invited to compete,” said Head Assistant Coach Mike Mendoza. “This is like the NFL Pro Bowl of wrestling.”
Monteiro completed his junior season with a 28-9 overall record. He claimed the heavyweight Pac-10 Championship and earned a second consecutive berth to the NCAA Tournament.
In addition to Monteiro, juniors Elijah Nacita and Riley Orozco have been selected to compete in the “feature bouts.” At 141, Nacita will take on Cal State Fullerton's Adin Duenas and at 197, Orozco will face UC Davis' Abe Otrambo.
Returning National Champions competing in the Classic include Nebraska's Jordan Burroughs (157) and Iowa's Jake Varner (197).
The Roadrunner 2009-10 regular season gets underway Nov. 28 when they travel to face preseason No. 5 Minnesota.
