BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Seniors Trent Blakley (Alta Loma HS) and Santwon Latunde (Landover, Md./Cowley County JC) each scored 18 points as the CSUB men's basketball team beat the Utah Valley Wolverines, 58-51, Tuesday evening at Rabobank Arena.
The win moves the Roadrunners to 1-1 on the season while Utah Valley drops to 1-1. CSUB has now taken the last three consecutive games from the Wolverines after sweeping the series in 2008-09.
Latunde found himself just one rebound shy of his second double-double of the year, grabbing a team-high nine boards. He also hit five of his six second-half free-throw attempts to help seal the win for the Roadrunners. Four of Blakley's 18 points came in the closing minutes of the game as Utah Valley was threatening to jump back into the contest. Freshman Stephon Carter (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces HS) had seven points and tied senior Donavan Bragg (Inglewood, Calif./Serra HS) for the team lead with four assists. Carter also added a team-high two blocked shots and had one steal. Bragg finished the night with seven points, hitting three big free-throws in the closing minutes.
Utah Valley held the lead early in the first half, building a nine point advantage midway through. The Roadrunners would get the score to within one point twice late in the half but the Wolverines would carry a three point advantage, 31-28, into the locker rooms.
After the break, Latunde went to work, scoring CSUB's first four points of the half to bring the lead back to three. A Bragg jumper and a couple of free throws from Carter would give the Roadrunners their first lead with 15:52 remaining in the game.
Utah Valley would battle back, grabbing a one point advantage on a Jordan Sarbrick layup with 8:55 remaining. But CSUB would score on its next two posessions to build a lead it would never relinquish. The Wolverines' Jourdain Scoubes scored five points in just over 40 seconds to pull within four, 51-47, but that would be as close as the Roadrunners would allow them to get.
Justin Baker was the lone Utah Valley player to reach double figures, scoring 10 points. Tyray Petty had a game-high 11 rebounds.
CSUB heads to Los Angeles on Friday to take on one of the nation's elite programs in UCLA inside historic Pauley Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. The game will be available on Fox Sports West.
