Women?s Soccer Ends Season With Loss to San Francisco

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSUB women's soccer team ended its 2009 campaign Sunday afternoon on the Main Soccer Field with a loss to the University of San Francisco, 1–0. The Roadrunners finished the season with a new program record of six NCAA Division I wins (6–11–2). The win snaps the Dons' five–match slide as USF improves to 7–6–5.

Alyson Drake scored for San Francisco in the game's 38th minute off a corner kick. Ashley O'Brien took the corner kick for the Dons and after a deflection from Samantha Brand, Drake finished to the far post for her third goal of the year.

Neither team was able to score in the second half despite the Roadrunners strong push late. CSUB outshot San Francisco, 8–5, including a 6–1 advantage in the second half. Sophomore Kassi Massey (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale HS) had a game–best three shots, all coming on goal. The Roadrunners were whistled for 12 fouls to San Francisco's nine and were called for two offside infractions. USF was awarded four corner kicks to CSUB's two.

Freshman Jessica Montaño (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS) started the first half for CSUB and made two saves. Sophomore Kym Gause (Manteca, Calif./Modesto JC) came in at the half and had one stop. Kelley Phole had five saves for the Dons.

"This was the fourth straight game that we outshot our opponent," Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke said. "That's a positive we can take out of today. We could have done better on the goal we let through but just like every game this season, we were competitive and never stopped working. While our record may not show it, the team and the staff have seen the improvement and development of our very young squad. We all know we are heading in the right direction. We are excited for the end of our transition period and for the return of our entire squad for the 2010 season. I, along with the entire team, want to say thank you to everyone who supported us during this season."

This concludes the 2009 CSUB women's soccer schedule.
