Roadrunners Beat Northridge on Ngo?s First Career Strike

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
Junior Alexandria Ngo (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento State) tallied her first career goal Friday afternoon as the CSUB women's soccer team beat Cal State Northridge, 1–0, on the Matador Soccer Field. With just 38 seconds remaining in regulation, Ngo got off a shot that beat the Northridge goalkeeper to the lower right hand side of the net to break a scoreless tie. Freshman Daisy Vazquez (Redwood City, Calif./Woodside HS) picked up her first career point as she was credited with the assist.

“I thought we deserved to win the game today,” Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke said. “I am happy and proud that we managed to get a road win and come out of what one would consider a slump. Once again we competed well again against a Big West opponent.”

The win moves the Roadrunners' record to 5–9–2 on the season while Cal State Northridge drops to 8–9–0. With three games in hand, CSUB's five victories equal the program's win totals from each of the two previous seasons. The win was also the fifth shutout victory of the season for the Roadrunners. Against the Big West this year, CSUB has gone 3–2–2 with wins against UC Riverside, Cal Poly and now Cal State Northridge. The Roadrunners tied Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton.

In her first career start, freshman goalkeeper Jessica Montaño earned the shutout victory with a three–save performance between the pipes. Freshman Yesenia Reyes (Bakersfield, Calif./Ridgeview HS) had a game–high five shots as the Roadrunners outshot the Matadors, 20–6, on the afternoon. Ngo and sophomore Kristina Martin Del Campo (San Jose, Calif./Piedmont Hills HS) each had three shots. Junior Sarah Gaskins (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) and Sam Peña (Bakersfield HS) each had two shots.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half. Martin Del Campo led all players with three total shots, two of those on goal. At the break, CSUB held a 7–2 advantage in total shots and forced Northridge goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo to make four saves. Jacobo was replaced by Leah Elliott in the second half.

In the second half, CSUB again held a strong 13–4 shot advantage. Northridge earned four corner kicks to CSUB's one and each team was whistled for eight fouls in the game's final 45 minutes.

The Roadrunners will host San Jose State on Sunday morning at the Main Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. and will be followed by the men's soccer team vs. Sacramento State.
