Roadrunners Earn Draw Against Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. -
One hundred and ten minutes were not enoughtime to decide the CSUB women's soccer match against Cal State Fullerton Thursday evening at Fullerton's Titan Stadium. Neither team was able to find the back of the net as the game ended in a 0–0 tie. The draw was CSUB's first of the season, moving the Roadrunners' record to 4–7–1 for the season. Fullerton is now 2–5–3 on the year.

One of CSUB's best scoring chances came in the 64th minute when sophomore Kassi Massey (Bakersfield/Stockdale HS) found some room to the right of the box and hit a shot that looked destined to slip inside the far post. The ball sailed just high, however, and hit the cross bar. Eight minutes later, junior Sarah Gaskins (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) lined up a shot from just outside the box, requiring Fullerton's Shannon Simpson to make a diving save to her left. On the ensuing corner kick, freshman Raquel Gervas (Upland HS) headed a ball just high of the net, keeping the score knotted at 0–0.

Early in the first overtime period, Fullerton's Felicia Franco headed a ball that required a great diving save from sophomore Kym Gause (Manteca, Calif./Modesto JC) to keep the Roadrunners alive.

Gause finished the game with four saves to earn her third shoutout of the season. Each team had six shots on the evening. Fullerton earned five corner kicks to Bakersfield's four while the 'Runners held a 17–8 edge in fouls.

“I was pleased with our intensity and focus tonight," said Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke. "I thought that was something that had been missing the past couple games. We had a couple good chances tonight and so did they. Overall, I though it was a very evenly match game."

CSUB's four–game road trip continues in one week as the Roadrunners head to Malibu, Calif., to take on the Pepperdine Waves on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 3 p.m.
