LOS ANGELES — Paced by consistent performances from returners Rachel McCall and Stephanie Donnelly, and newcomer Louise Westergren, the CSUB women's swim team opened the 2009-10 season with solid times across the board in a pair of Invitational meets hosted by USC Saturday.
“We had good times top to bottom,” said CSUB Head Coach Pat Skehan. “The kids who stayed in Bakersfield and trained this summer did really well and overall our depth looks better.”
McCall and Westergren each earned a first place finish during the two meets to lead the way for the Roadrunners. CSUB's top sprint freestyle swimmer a year ago, McCall won the 50 yard free in 24.68. She also took fifth in the 100 yard breast in 1:09.31. Westergren, a freshman from Sweden, won the 100 yard fly in 1:00.73 and the 50 meter free in 27.64.
Donnelly chipped in a pair of solid performances in the 100 meter and 100 yard backstroke events, placing sixth in each race. She finished the 100 meter race in 1:07.34 and finished the 100 yard race in 1:01.17.
Junior Michelle Kroll placed fifth in the 100 meter breaststroke, touching in 1:15.26, and second in 4:52.18 in the 400 yard individual medley.
The Roadrunner distance swimmers saw time drop from last year's marks, led by Macie Hammond's 11:32.35 in the 1,000 yard free, more than 30 seconds faster than her personal best from one season ago.
The squad takes a break from official competition next week to host an Alumni meet Oct. 17 at the Hillman Aquatics Center. They then return to action Oct. 31 in a dual meet at University of Pacific.
