BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The CSUB men's soccer team earned a 16-6 shot advantage against Cal Poly, but could not convert its best opportunities, resulting in a 0-0 double overtime draw Saturday on the Main Soccer Field.
The Roadrunners' second tie of the season moves their record to 5-3-2 overall while the Mustangs are now 4-7-1. Despite not being able to find the game-winner, Bakersfield remains undefeated on its home field through five matches.
The first 45 minutes provided little offensive action by either side, though the Roadrunners created the best chances of the half. Midway through, Cal Poly goalkeeper Brett Finkelstein was drawn out of the net by CSUB's attack, leaving an open net for Jesus Sanchez. But his shot from the top left side of the box went just wide of the far post.
Nearly 20 minutes into the second half, Kory Kindle and Sanchez combined to move the ball up the central midfield and into the box. Sanchez hooked a shot around Finkelstein, but the ball was again just wide, knocking off the right post. Evan Fassler slid in to push the ball back towards the goal, but Finkelstein recovered to smother the ball.
In the final minutes of regulation it was CSUB goalkeeper Eric Shannon who came up big, first saving a shot by Jacob Hustedt, then punching a header by Daniel Cumming over the net, forcing extra time.
Bakersfield earned a 4-1 shot advantage in the two 10-minute overtime periods, but still could not find the back of the net.
The Mustangs had one final opportunity, earning a free kick 30 yards out in the waning seconds. Junior Burgos sent a bullet at the CSUB goal, but Shannon came up big once again, diving right and punching the ball over the net, earning his fourth shutout of the season.
Shannon finished the match with four saves while claiming his third shutout in the past four outings.
This week, the 'Runners begins conference play for the first time since making the move to Division I. They travel to Las Vegas Friday for their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match of the season, taking on UNLV at 7 p.m. The two-match road swing concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. against the University of New Mexico.
