Arase?s Last Second Bucket Leads CSUB Over Big West Leading Gauchos

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
UC Santa Barbara senior guard Lauren Pedersen calmly knocked down all three of her free throw attempts to tie the game at 67?67 with eight seconds remaining, and looked to have sent the game to extra time. But senior Krista Arase (Monterey Park/Keppel HS) quickly took the ball up the court, shook her defender and drove right. With the clock just about to strike zero, Arase let go a soft arcing layup from the right block that hit the opposite side of the rim, took a big bounce and fell through the hoop as time expired, ending the Big West leading Gauchos' 10-game winning streak.

The CSUB women's basketball team improved to 14?8 with its 69?67 victory over UC Santa Barbara Saturday evening in the Icardo Center. The Gauchos (13?7) had won its' previous 10 games heading into the contest with the ?Runners. UCSB also held a perfect 8?0 Big West record. The Roadrunners improve to 6?1 against Big West opponents this season.

Senior Christine Kepenekian (Burbank HS) led the way with 23 points on 6-for-13 shooting. Arase finished with 19 points including the game-winning layup. Junior Katie Williams (Las Vegas/Reedley College) had 13 points, giving her 11 consecutive games with double-digit scoring totals. Classmate Phynique Allen (San Diego/Eastern Washington) had 10 points before fouling out late in the second half. The ?Runners shot 32.3 percent from the field while UCSB shot 21-for-49 (42.9%). CSUB forced 16 Gaucho turnovers while committing only 11. Williams had four of the team's eight steals.

Neither team was able to pull away from the other as the game saw the lead change hands 10 times and was knotted up at 11 different points. CSUB built a lead of 10 points early in the second half only to watch the Gauchos climb back and pull ahead by four with 10:33 remaining.

In the first half, the ?Runners built leads of seven points twice before UCSB battled back to take the lead, 23?22, with 4:11 left. CSUB would score 11 of the next 13 points to close out the half for an eight-point halftime advantage, 33?25.

Eleven times in the second half, the score was tied up as both teams tried to swing the momentum in its favor. Down by two with 2:41 remaining, Kepenekian drew a foul on UCSB's Sha'Rae Gibbons who argued the call and received a technical. Arase hit the two bonus free throws and Kepenekian knocked down her foul shots to complete CSUB's four-point possession to take the lead by two. After a Margaret Johnson layup, Arase stepped up and knocked down a three to give CSUB the lead, 67?64, with 1:42 remaining. With the shot clock off, the Gauchos freed up Pedersen for a three-point attempt from the top of the key. Pedersen missed the shot but drew a foul on Williams. After hitting the three free throws, Arase would drive the length of the floor for the game-winner.

Jenna Green had 16 points to lead the Gauchos. Ashlee Brown added 15, Pedersen had 13 and Johnson scored 10 for UCSB.

The ?Runners will have a week off before returning to the Icardo Center on Saturday, Feb. 7, for a 7 p.m. contest against Houston Baptist.
