FULLERTON, Calif.
- The CSUB women's basketball team put together one if its best offensive
performances of the season as the Roadrunners defeated the Cal State Fullerton
Titans, 90-76, Saturday evening in Fullerton, Calif. The ?Runners improve to
13-7 on the season with the win while the Titans fall to 6-10. The win also
gives CSUB a perfect 5-0 record against Big West opponents this season.
Senior Christine Kepenekian led the way with 22 points and
15 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. She was joined in
double figures by Krista Arase (19), Katie Williams (15) and Nikhol West (10).
The team shot a scorching 55.7 percent from the field including a 60 percent
mark in the second half. The ?Runners outrebounded the Titans, 39-33.
After falling behind by six points early, CSUB took its
first lead of the game, 16-15, as Katie Williams drew a foul in the lane and
converted from the charity stripe.
Timely three-point shooting helped keep the ?Runners in the
game during the first half. Fullerton's
Megan Richardson, who came in averaging 10 points per contest, hit her first
five shots of the evening and led all scorers at the break with 18.
The Titan lead would grow to nine points with less than
three minutes to play but CSUB would battle back and keep the score close.
With the clock running down in the first half, Arase converted
a tough layup and was rewarded with a foul. She would hit the ensuing free
throw to bring the ?Runners within one point at the half, 46-45. Both teams
came out firing in the first half as CSUB shot 51.6 percent from the field but
was nearly matched by CSF's 50 percent showing.
The ?Runners would retake the lead, 47-46, on the first
possession of the second half as Kepenekian drove in and hit a tough-contested
layup. After a three from Fullerton,
Katie Williams would score the game's next six points to put CSUB up, 53-49.
CSUB would open up a seven point lead, 72-65, as the teams
broke for the under-eight minute timeout. Allen would convert a three-point
play a few minutes later to push the lead out to 10 points, 77-67, with less
than five minutes to play.
With the Titan defense tightening up, the Roadrunners used
crisp passing to break the press to extend the lead to 12, 85-73, as the clock
ticked under two minutes to play.
A couple desperation three-point attempts by the Titans fell
short and CSUB was able to hold on for the 14-point victory. CSUB held Richardson
to just four points in the second half as she finished with 22 to lead the
Titans. Toni Thomas had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Ashley
Richie had 10 points.

the Cal Poly Mustangs at 7 p.m.
