'Runner Wrestling Splits A Pair Of Duals

CSUB Runs Over Aggies, 34-7

 

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB wrestling team dominated start to finish in a 34-7 pounding of Pac-10 rival UC Davis Friday night in the Icardo Center. The Roadrunners won eight of 10 matches, including a pair of forfeits to improve to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in conference duals.

Trevor Hall started the night off with a 18-6 major decision over the Aggies' Joey Wilson at 157. Wilson scored a takedown early to go up 2-0, but Hall responded with two escapes, a takedown and a pair of two-point nearfalls in the first period to hold an 8-4 advantage. Hall stretched his lead to 12-6 after two periods, then scored a takedown, three-point nearfall and riding time in the third.

Davis' Dustin Noack cut the CSUB lead to 4-3 with a 9-6 decision over Joey Granata at 165, but Jason Points stretched the ?Runner lead back to four with a 10-5 decision over Tyler Bernacchi at 174. Bernacchi entered the match ranked No. 1 in the latest Pac-10 poll, while Points was listed at No. 3.

At 184, CSUB's Riley Orozco improved to 4-1 since moving down a weight class, claiming a 9-2 decision over John Clark. Orozco took a 4-1 lead in the first period on a pair of takedowns, and only allowed Clark one more point in the final four minutes of action.

Brandon Halsey, currently ranked No. 7 in the USA Today/Intermat/NWCA poll, pushed the ?Runner lead to 16-3 with a forfeit victory at 197. No. 8 ranked Mitch Monteiro followed with a 10-2 major decision over John Thurston at heavyweight and No. 15 ranked Brandon Zoetewey earned a 16-0 technical fall over Chris Armendariz.

Thomas Kimbrell won by forfeit at 133, extending the Roadrunner cushion to 31-3 and Elijah Nacita claimed a 10-4 decision over Nexi Delgado at 141.

The Aggies were able to close out the night with a win at 149 as Barrett Abel earned an 11-0 major decision over CSUB's Calvin Miller.

Bakersfield travels to San Francisco to take part in the California Open on Jan. 31, then returns to the Icardo Center Feb. 1 to host Oregon State in a Pac-10 dual beginning at 2 p.m.
