Weekend Sweep: 'Runners Take Down Huskies in Texas

EDINBURGH, Texas -
Three Roadrunners recorded double-doubles as the CSUB women's basketball team defeated the Houston Baptist Huskies, 82?73, Sunday evening in Edinburgh, Texas. The win marked CSUB's fourth-straight victory and second in as many days. The Roadrunners improve to 12-7 on the year, matching last season's win total with 10 contests remaining. The Huskies drop to 6?13 with the loss.

Seniors Morgan Saso (Bakersfield/Univ. of New Mexico), Christine Kepenekian (Burbank HS) and Krista Arase (Alhambra, Calif./Keppel HS) all recorded double-doubles for the ?Runners. Kepenekian led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds to record her seventh double-double of the season. Arase knocked down all nine of her free-throw attempts to finish with 21 points and 10 assists. Saso grabbed 10 boards and scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

CSUB shot a season-best 58 percent (29-for-50) from the field and outrebounded Houston Baptist, 34?23. The ?Runners led wire-to-wire but the game was anything but smooth sailing. Turnovers seemed to be the theme of the evening as CSUB turned the ball over a season-high 33 times but the defense also caused a season-best 26 Husky turnovers.

The Roadrunners scored the game's first seven points of contest and late in the half, pushed the lead to a game-high 17 points as junior Katie Williams (Las Vegas/Reedley College), who finished the game with 13 points, scored in the paint. Houston Baptist would battle back and cut the CSUB advantage down to six points as the first half finished, 42?36.

In the second half, the ?Runners would push the lead back out to 13, 57?44, as Kepenekian hit a three off a pass from Arase with 13:26 left to play. Again Houston Baptist would fight back, scoring 14 of the next 15 points to tie the game, 58?58. The Huskies would force three more ties but would never gain the advantage as CSUB pulled away late, building a 10-point advantage with 3:41 left.

Megan Morris came off the bench to score 17 points to lead Houston Baptist. Raquel Jones (14), Jelela Simpson (12) and Cindee Wright (10) all scored in double figures for the Huskies.

CSUB will stay on the road for a Saturday, Jan. 24 contest at Big West member Cal State Fullerton at 5 p.m.
