SPOKANE, Wash. ? In cold, rainy and windy weather, an early goal by Gonzaga stood through then end of regulation as the CSUB men's soccer team fell 1-0 in the championship match of the Gonzaga/Nike Classic Sunday.

Bakersfield, now 2-6-0 on the season, accumulated nine corner kick opportunities, including seven in the second half, but was only able to mount seven shots to the Bulldogs' 12.

The lone goal of the match came at the 8:35 mark when Gonzaga's (3-2-1 overall) Collin Harrison sent a ball up the right flank to Bryan Mullaney. Mullaney cut the ball to the endline near the goal and chipped a pass back to the front of the goalmouth where Philippe Garre headed a shot past CSUB keeper Steve Trojanowski.

The Roadrunners build the ball out of the back throughout the match, but often came up just short of the final pass needed for a strong shot opportunity.

In the 63rd minute, Manny Guzman gave the ?Runners one of their best chances, blasting a low shot from nearly 40 yards out. The shot slipped through the hands of diving Gonzaga keeper Scott Barnum, but the ball bounced off the right post and Barnum was able to collect the lose ball.

Bakersfield continued to push forward in the waning minutes, seeking the equalizer to force overtime. With just under three minutes remaining, Towa Manda used his chest to deflect a cross towards the net, but Barnum came up with another diving save to preserve the lead.

Barnum finished with five saves while Trojanowski had three. The senior keeper from La Verne, along with defender Anthon Snygg and midfielder Manny Guzman were named to the all tournament team.

The ?Runners continue their 10-match season-opening road swing Wednesday when they travel to face Cal Poly in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
