Roadrunners Fall to Northridge, 2?0

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.
- The CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team (2?2) fell to the Cal State Northridge Matadors (3?0) Sunday evening on the Main Soccer Field, 2?0. The loss was the ?Runners first at home this season.

The Matadors got an early lead in the 35th minute off a free kick that was deflected around in the box. The ball went off a Northridge player and looked as though CSUB goalkeeper Marina Constantinou would be able to punch the ball out of danger. However the clear attempt went straight to the Matadors' Farryn Townley who put it into the back of the net.

With CSUB pushing forward late in the second half looking for the equalizer, Northridge's Brielle Slepicoff connected with Tinamarie Lutizetti who took a shot from the top box. The shot went straight to Constantinou but she was unable to control it as the ball bounced into the back of the net, giving the Matadors an insurance marker in the 71st minute.

“Unfortunately we lost to the better team tonight,” Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke said. “You have to give Northridge credit. They were first to the ball all night. We showed some good signs of progress in the second half when we gambled a bit, but it just took us too long to get into the game.”

Constantinou made six saves in goal for the ?Runners. CSUB was outshot, 14?5.

CSUB will play a pair of games in Washington next weekend, starting with a Friday night contest at Eastern Washington before heading to Gonzaga on Sunday. Games begin at 4 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
