?Runners Fall 1-0 To No. 30 UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. ? CSUB men's soccer team nearly held No. 30 preseason ranked UC Davis scoreless for 90 minutes of regulation, but the Aggies broke through with just under two minutes remaining as the Roadrunners fell 1-0 on the final day of the Copa de Causeway Classico, cohosted by UC Davis and Sacramento State.

Bakersfield, now 0-2 on the season, was forced to remain on the defensive for the majority of the match against the Aggies (2-0 overall), who earned a berth into the NCAA tournament a year ago.

“We played quite well,” said CSUB Head Coach Simon Tobin. “Today was different from Friday when we dominated the match. Davis was the better team and had more chances.”

Steve Trojanowski came up big over and over again for the Roadrunners, finishing the match with six saves on 13 Aggie shots.

The breakthrough for Davis came in the 89th minute, when Chris Beville send a long cross from the right sideline into the middle of the box. Quincy Amarikwa, a returning All-Big West Conference selection from 2007, headed the cross into the net.

“(Davis) is one of the three or four top teams on our schedule and (Amarikwa) is one of the top five or six forwards in the country,” said Tobin. “We kept him in check for the majority of the match, but good players will find a way to score.”

Ian Conklin and Paul Marcoux led the Aggies with four shots apiece, while Amarikwa had three. Wayne Lampart had CSUB's lone shot for the day, but did not challenge UC Davis keeper Ryan McCown.

Trojanowski and Lampart were both named to the 11-member all-tournament team for their performances in the weekend's matches.

Bakersfield travels south Friday and Sunday, taking on Cal State Northridge and Cal State Fullerton at the Cal State Fullerton Tournament. The matches, scheduled for 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, will both be played at Titan Stadium.
