SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? A goal by Sacramento State's Blake Nunes just six minutes into the match dashed the Roadrunners' hopes of extending their season-opening win streak to nine consecutive years, as CSUB's men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Hornets Friday at the Copa de Causeway Classico.
Nunes' score came at the 5:54 mark off of a double assist by Ernesto Carranza and Chris Bettencourt. Carranza began the play at midfield, sending a long ball to Bettencourt near the top of the box. Bettencourt one-touched the ball to his left where Nunes collected it and struck it past CSUB keeper Steve Trojanowski.
“We had a defensive breakdown at the beginning of the game,” said CSUB Head Coach Simon Tobin. “After that we had good looks and better chances to score, we just didn't convert. We did enough to win.”
After the early goal, CSUB put the pressure on the Hornets, holding an eight-to-five shot advantage at the break and a 10-9 edge for the match.
The ?Runners also created five corner kick opportunities, but were unable to find the equalizing goal.
Sac State's freshman keeper, Bryan Oliver, held Bakersfield in check, collecting five saves. Trojanowski tallied three saves for the ?Runners.
CSUB will look to rebound Sunday, making the short trip over to UC Davis for a noon kickoff against the Aggies.
