MOORPARK, Calif. ? By they way it finished Tuesday, it looks as if the second season of the CSUB women's golf program ended too soon.
Led by freshman Jennifer Beggs, whose 79 matched the third?lowest round in CSUB women's golf history, the Roadrunners shot 336 Tuesday?the second?lowest team round in school history?as the concluded the season with a ninth place finish at the Matador Spring Invitational on the Tierra Rejada Golf Course.
Only Meggan Bellows, who set the CSUB record with a 76 last season, and Jenna Barnett, who carded a 78 at the NCAA West Region Preview last week, have done better than the career?low 79 Beggs carded Tuesday. She matched a pair of 79s turned in by Jennifer Haws earlier this season.
Beggs was not the only Roadrunner to play well. Bellows and Barnett supported her effort with rounds of 83 and 84 respectively. Ashley Neal closed out the CSUB scoring with a 90, just two strokes off her collegiate best.
Those rounds added up to a 336 for Bakersfield. It was the best finishing round ever for the Roadrunners, breaking the old mark of 337 set at the Lady Otter Invitational on Oct. 2. It was also three strokes off the school record of 333 set at the Mauna Lani Invitational on Oct. 29.
Cal Poly shot 295 Tuesday to widen its first round lead into a seven stroke victory at 607. Host Cal State Northridge finished second at 614.
Cal Poly's Hannah Brabb carded the only sub-par round of the tournament by shooting 70 Tuesday to earn a three?stroke victory over UC Riverside's Jennifer Bermingham, 145 to 148.
Barnett was CSUB's top finisher, placing 33rd at 166.
