ST. LOUIS, Mo. ? Four CSUB wrestlers spent all day Thursday fighting to survive for a second day at the 2008 NCAA Division I National Championships, but just one managed to make his way onto Friday's bracket as the three others came up short at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
In the championship bracket, Brandon Zoetewey fell 21-6 to reigning 125-pound national champion, and current No. 3 ranked, Paul Donahoe of Nebraska. Despite the loss, Zoetewey remains alive for a second day of competition and will open Friday morning's session in the consolation bracket against Cornell's Mike Rodriquez.
Fighting to extent his career for another day, senior Daniel Atondo gave it his best shot, but never got control of the wrestleback match in a 13-5 loss to Old Dominion's Chris Brown.
Atondo trailed just 4-2 at the end of the first period, but could not turn the tide as Brown continued to build the eventual eight-point lead. Atondo closed out his senior season with a 32-14 record, while finishing his career with 69 wins and a pair of third place Pac-10 finishes.
At 285, Mitch Monteiro's short debut season as a Roadrunner came to a close Thursday night when he suffered a 12-6 loss to North Carolina's Justin Dobies in a pigtails match in the consolation bracket. The sophomore out of Paso Robles finished the year with a 3-3 record.
In the Roadrunners' final bout of the night, Riley Orozco closed out an otherwise solid freshman season with a 13-3 loss to Andrew Anderson of Northern Iowa at 197. Orozco finished his rookie campaign with a 25-15 record, while his appearance at the national championships marked the first time a CSUB freshman had earned that right since 2002.
“Our sophomore and freshman picked up a lot of valuable experience today,” said CSUB Head Coach T.J. Kerr of Monteiro and Orozco. “Hopefully both of those guy can learn and grow from this and be on fire for spring and summer workouts.”
Friday's morning session gets underway at 10 a.m. Central Standard Time.
