DAVIS, Calif. ? The CSUB men's basketball enjoyed a spectacular night shooting, but untimely turnovers and UC Davis' lack of second half fouls proved decisive in the closing seconds of a thrilling 87-86 Aggie win at the Pavilion in Davis.
Junior forward Trent Blakley (Alta Loma HS) enjoyed another strong game with 22 points, including six three-pointers. Junior forward Santwon Latunde (Landover, Md./Cowley County CC) added 17 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Joe Harden led five Aggies in double figures with 18 points, including 10-of-11 from the free-throw line.
CSUB (3-5 overall) led late in a game which featured 10 ties and 20 lead changes. But Alex Johnson's threw the ball away with the Roadrunners clinging to an 86-85 lead and less than 30 seconds remaining. Harden sank a pair of freethrows with six seconds remaining to put Davis on top.
The Aggies had collected only four team fouls to that point, so they fouled intentionally twice to burn the clock. The Roadrunners finally inbounded the ball for their final attempt with 1.2 seconds left, but their desperation attempt didn't draw iron.
That the game was so close came as little surprise given the red-hot shooting on display Saturday. CSUB shot a season-high 54 percent (33-of-61) while Davis connected on 58 percent of its attempts, including 10-of-16 from beyond the arc.
For its part, CSUB drained 14 three-pointers. That total was just two off the team record of 16 set at San Francisco State in 2006.
Both teams seemed poised to take control early, with the Roadrunners opening a seven-point lead on their first possession of the second half after Davis led by as many as six early in the game.
After the Aggies caught CSUB at 57-57, neither team was able to take command. The Roadrunners led by as many as four points three times down the stretch, and had a chance to extend their lead to five with 43 seconds remaining, but Blakley missed two freethrows with the Roadrunners clinging to an 86-83 lead.
