CORVALLIS, Ore.
- Despite a 32-point scoring outburst from junior Katie Williams, the CSUB
women's basketball team fell to Pac-10 member Oregon State, 66-56, Sunday
afternoon at Gil Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore.
Williams scored more than half of her team's points, shooting 14-for-20 and 2-of-4 from deep. The ?Runners
are now 7-6 while Oregon State
improves to 8-1. This was the first meeting between the two programs.
Williams was the only Roadrunner in double figures as CSUB's
top scorer Christine Kepenekian scored nine points while Krista Arase was held
scoreless in 28 minutes of action. Morgan Saso, who had scored in double
figures the past three games, had four points with four rebounds. Kepenekian led
the team with eight rebounds and Arase had three assists.
CSUB shot 40.4 percent from the field but was just 3-of-13
from behind the arc. The Roadrunners were also 7-for-8 from the charity stripe.
Oregon State
made 21 more visits to the free throw line than the ?Runners, making 22-of-29.
The Beavers outrebounded CSUB, 43-39 but the ?Runners led in second-chance
points, 10-7. CSUB's bench outscored Oregon
State, 37-4. The Beavers had eight
blocks and eight steals on the afternoon.
In the first half, Oregon
State built leads of 10 points
twice. Down 27-17, the ?Runners went on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to five at
the break. Katie Williams and Morgan Saso each scored buckets and Christine
Kepenekian knocked down two free throws to keep CSUB close.
The Beavers led 28-23 at halftime, holding the ?Runners to
31 percent shooting. CSUB was just 1-of-6 from deep but was a perfect 4-for-4
from the charity stripe. The Roadrunners grabbed five offensive rebounds and
converted them into six second chance points.
CSUB fought back strong in the second half, pulling to
within one point three different times. Oregon
State built its lead up to eight,
44-36, with 8:50 to go in the contest
and was looking to seal away a victory. Kepenekian responded with a hoop and
harm followed by another quick jumper and a Katie Williams layup brought the
game back to within three at 46-43. But the Beavers would not let the ?Runners
back to within five as they built a game-high 12 point lead with 3:05 to go. Oregon
State would score its final nine
points from the charity stripe to secure the 10-point win.
Talisa Rhea (23), Cedes Fox-Griffin (17) and Alex Mitchell
(12) all reached double-figures for the Beavers. Fox-Griffin had six assists
while Tiffany Ducker had nine rebounds and four blocked shots.
CSUB
will break for the Christmas holiday before opening up a four-game homestand
beginning with UC Irvine on Dec. 30. Tip is scheduled for noon. The ?Runners beat the
Anteaters, 85-63, in Irvine, Calif., on Nov. 25.
