BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? Coming off an impressive fourth place finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions Thursday, the CSUB wrestling squad returned to the Icardo Center Saturday for a pair of duals, and easily claimed victory in both, earning a 42-3 win over Cal Baptist and 39-9 win over Pac-10 rival Portland State.
The Roadrunners are now 3-3 in dual meets and 2-0 in Pac-10 action. Cal Baptist fell to 2-6 after also dropping a 27-19 dual to the Portland State, and the Vikings moved to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in the Pac-10.
Against the Lancers, four ?Runners won by fall and all but one CSUB wrestler was victorious in the runaway win. Sophomore Trevor Hall, who was forced to medical forfeit his final two matches at the Reno TOC, returned to the mat to claim a big 14-3 major decision at 157 over Lamar Reed, who is ranked No. 8 nationally in the NAIA. Joey Granata (165), Jason Points (174) and Ernesto Ancona (184) followed with three consecutive falls and Brandon Halsey (197) earned 21-6 technical fall over Cal Baptist's Vince Pezzuto to put the ?Runner squad up 27-0.
At heavyweight, David Morgan won with an 11-4 decision and Frank Lomas (125) scored a 6-1 decision over No. 5 ranked Chauncey Phillips. Justin Durham (133) earned a quick fall over No. 5 Andrew Collins and Elijah Nacita squeaked out a 3-2 decision at 141 to give CSUB a 42-0 lead. Jarell Price earned the Lancers' lone win of the dual, breaking a 5-5 tie against Sam Barnhart (149) with a takedown with 24 seconds remaining.
Collecting two points off of stalling warnings from opponent Alex Bubb, Hall opened the dual against Portland State with a 3-1 decision, and Granata followed with a fall victory over Bryan Cantrell To put the ?Runners up 9-0.
Brady Garner gave the Vikings their first points of match with an 11-10 decision over Points, but Ancona pushed the lead back to 10 with a 15-4 major decision over Tony Contreras.
Mitch Monteiro, Thomas Kimbrell and Nacita all claimed fall victories, while Barnhart won by decision and Lomas picked up a big 15-0 technical fall for the remainder of the ?Runner wins.
Bakersfield takes a short break for the Christmas holiday, then returns to action Dec. 29-30 in Greensboro, N.C., competing at the 200 Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC-Greensboro.
