SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. ? Facing perennial national powerhouses Missouri and Oklahoma, the CSUB wrestling team got standout performances from Brandon Zoetewey, Thomas Kimbrell and Trevor Hall, but ultimately fell 25-14 to the No. 5 ranked Tigers and 26-12 to the No. 12 ranked Sooners Saturday at the Central Coast Duals.
“These duals were a really good experience for the whole team,” said Roadrunner Assistant Head Coach Mike Mendoza. “Eveyrone wrestled hard and we had some big wins.”
Zoetewey, ranked No. 15 in the latest USA Today/InterMat/NWCA national poll, gave the ?Runners six points right off the bat against Missouri, pinning Troy Dolan at the 3:24 mark of the 125 bout. No. 20 ranked Kimbrell followed with a 14-4 major decision at 133 over Luke Cherep to put CSUB up 10-0. A pair of CSUB losses at 141 and 149 left the ?Runners ahead 10-7, before a 14-5 major decision by Hall at 157 pushed the lead back to seven.
Hall, a sophomore, picked up CSUB's most impressive win of the day, knocking off No. 4 nationally ranked Mike Chandler, who had not lost a match yet this season.
The Tigers took over after that, however, winning the final five weight classes for the 25-14 win.
Zoetewey and Kimbrell started things off strong against Oklahoma, each winning by decision to put CSUB ahead 6-0, and Hall added a fall victory over No. 16 ranked Shane Vernon at 157, but once again, no other ?Runner was able to pick up a win.
The Roadrunners head back to Bakersfield to prep for a busy upcoming week. CSUB travels to take part on the Reno Tournament of Champions on Thursday, then returns to the CSUB Icardo Center to host Cal Baptist and Pac-10 rival Portland State Saturday at 12:30 and 2 p.m.
