LONG BEACH, Calif. ? The CSUB men's basketball team pulled off the most dramatic win of its young life as an NCAA Division I program, scoring six unanswered points in the final 56 seconds to force overtime en route to an 80?77 win over Big West Conference member Long Beach State Wednesday at the Walter Pyramid.
Junior swingman Terrence Johns (Chicago/Bakersfield College) led CSUB (7?13 overall) with 20 points, his fifth 20?plus point game of the season. Sophomore forward Trent Blakley (Alta Loma HS) played another big game, scoring 19 points with a game?high 10 rebounds.
Their efforts helped offset a monster night from Long Beach junior Donovan Morris, who exploded for 24 points in the final 25 minutes to lead all scorers with 27.
Neither team was able to gain control in taut second half until Long Beach seemed to grab the game by the throat when leading scorer Donovan Morris drilled a three?pointer to give the 49ers their biggest lead of the half at 68?62 with 56 second remaining. But that's when Blakley exchanged his usual number 12 jersey for one sporting a big red “S” on the front.
Blakley needed just six second to respond with a long three of his own to get CSUB back within three points. The 'Runner defense then made a big play when Demarcus Hall (Richmond/College of the Sequoias) scrambled to the floor to strip the ball from 49er guard Brice Gallow before alertly calling a time out to save possession for CSUB.
Hall's heroics set up the biggest shot of Blakley's young career. With CSUB entering the ball in front of its own bench and nine seconds remaining, Blakley took the inbounds pass from Donavan Bragg (Inglewood/Serra HS) and drilled a three from well beyond NBA range to force the extra period.
Overtime proved to be as tight as the first 40 minutes, although this time, CSUB led for most of the period. With the game tied at 75, Blakley hit one more big shot. This one was a short jumper in the paint that gave the 'Runners a 77?75 lead they would not relinquish.
The 49ers had a chance to tie or take the lead on the ensuing possession, but Morris, who had been on fire scoring six points in overtime, slipped and lost the ball out of bounds while driving to his right. A Johns jumper and a Bragg free throw accounted for the final points.
CSUB continues its five?game road trip Friday when it plays at the University of Portland.
