The CSUB volleyball team got its first shot at a nationally?ranked NCAA Division I opponent, and the Roadrunners couldn't pull off the Appalation State type upset as No. 7 Texas rolled to a 30?12, 30?20, 30?19 victory Thursday in the opening match of the Time Warner Cable Invitational in Austin.
Destinee Hooker collected match highs of 16 kills and three aces to lead the Longhorns (3?2) to their third consecutive victory after a pair of season?opening losses to Penn State. CSUB dropped to 3?6 with the loss.
Senior middle blocker Melissa Myers led Bakersfield with eight kills. Junior libero Mystie McNaughton led the defense with a match?high 11 digs.
Bakersfield's best chance came in the second game. The Roadrunners were tied as late as 14?14 and served down just four points at 21?17 before the Longhorns pulled away. With both teams subbing liberally in game three, the 'Runners pulled to within two at 14?12 before a quick 7?0 run by Texas put the match on ice.
