CHENEY, Wash. ? An Eagle goal in the waning minutes of regulation spoiled the CSUB women's soccer team's first trip to Eastern Washington University as EWU pulled out a 1?0 decision Friday afternoon in Cheney, Wash.
Chelsey Hannesson blasted a free kick from well outside the box and slipped it under the crossbar for the game's lone score in the 86th minute. Bakersfield (1?4 overall) had a chance to tie it with virtually its entire team scrambling in the box in the closing seconds, but the Roadrunners couldn't find the equalizer.
“It was disappointing to give up that late goal, but (Hannesson) struck it well,” said CSUB Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke. “But this match wasn't about the end, it was about another slow start by us. We just didn't come to play in the first 45 minutes and that more than anything is why we lost this match.
“Not to take anything away from EWU, but this was a match I believe we would have won if we would have produced 90 minutes of solid effort. We didn't and we lost.”
The 'Runners outshot Eastern 15?13, though Van Dyke believed that stat didn't do justice to her team's offensive advantage Friday. CSUB also put five shots on frame to three by the Eagles.
The 'Runners will conclude a four?match road trip Sunday when they head across the boarder to face the University of Idaho at 1 p.m. They return to the Main Soccer Field Thursday, Sept. 20 to host UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m.
