BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB volleyball team continues to enjoy life at the NCAA Division I level, winning its third consecutive match with a 30?22, 30?17, 30?28 win over Idaho State Friday night at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield.
Senior middle blocker Melissa Myers (Wasco HS) paced an efficient Bakersfield (3?2 overall) offense by equaling her career high of 14 kills while hitting .370. Junior libero Mystie McNaughton (Stockdale HS) led a staunch defensive effort with a match?high 22 digs.
For the fifth consecutive match, junior outside hitter Sarah Norman (Stockdale HS/UC Irvine) led all attackers, this time with 15 kills.
Freshman Charlee Kinghorn led Idaho State (2?4) with 11 kills. Setter Christine Van Orden added 25 assists and a team?high 16 digs.
The Roadrunners swept ISU six days early at the Oregon Kickoff Classic in a match that played out as a mirror image of Friday's contest. In Oregon, the teams played two close games before the 'Runners eased away in game three. Friday, CSUB used a 9?1 run to take control midway through the first game, led wire?to?wire in game two, then held off a spirited comeback effort that brought the Bengals within four points of victory in game three.
In the pivotal game three, ISU led 26?23 when Norman took over. Her first kill in the sequence followed an incredible dig by McNaughton off a great swing from Sarah Carson, capping a quick run that tied the match at 26?26.
She gave the 'Runners their first lead since early in the game with a second kill that made the score 28?27. She then closed out the match with a kill in transition for the 30?28 win.
CSUB continues its busy Labor Day weekend when it hosts West Coast Conference contender Saint Mary's College Saturday at 7 p.m. That match will follow an undercard between ISU and UC Davis that begins at 4:30 p.m.
