Cooper Places In Pair Of Events At DI Independent Championships

DAVIS, Calif. ? Cal State Bakersfield freshman Sheena Cooper placed in two events to highlight the final day of the NCAA Division I Independent Championships held Sunday at Woody Wilson Track on the campus of UC Davis.

Cooper earned a pair of seventh place finishes in the competition. She was seventh in the 100 meters at 12.38, and followed with a time of 25.29 in the 200 meters. She was the top freshman in the 100 meters and missed moving up two places by just 0.10 seconds.

But Cooper wasn't the only Roadrunner to find some success on Sunday. Sophomore Ryan Lucker was sixth in the 800 meters at 1:55.88 while freshman and former Foothill High standout Daniel Hernandez was seventh in the 400 hurdles in a time of 58.00. In the men's javelin, Evan Wahl was fourth at 161-10.

On the women's side, freshman Connie King was eighth in the 400 hurdles at 1:07.30 and the women's 4x400 meter relay team placed seventh in 4:07.44.

Bakersfield finished near the middle of the competition in the team standings despite competing in the meet for the first time. The women placed seventh with 30 points and knocked off competition from three universities: University of San Francisco, Chicago State and New Jersey Tech. Bakersfield's men were eighth in a larger men's field and defeated San Francisco, Central Arkansas, Santa Clara and New Jersey Tech.

This meet concluded Bakersfield's 2007 season.
