TURLOCK, CALIF. – Senior pitcher Kristyn Daniels won two games, including her sixth shutout of the season, as the Cal State Bakersfield softball team went 2-1 on the opening day of the Tournament of Champions Present By Mizzuno Friday in Turlock.
Bakersfield defeated BYU-Hawaii 1-0 and Western Washington 8-5 and lost to Hawaii Pacific 7-1.
Daniels was masterful in the win over BYU, fanning eight while scattering three hits. Senior outfielder Carrie Hilvers made her a winner with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly.
Daniels (13-6) allowed just four hits in the win over Western Washington, but a but a Heather Veitch error set the table for her only mistake of the day when she allowed a two-out grand slam as part of a five-run Viking third inning. All five WWU runs were unearned.
Freshman Kelli Bailey belted her third home run of the season in the first inning versus WWU, but Kianna Urbanski's two-out single in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the big blow, breaking open a 5-5 tie and leading the Roadrunners to the win.
Junior outfielder Bethany Snow hit her second home run of the season against Hawaii Pacific, but the Sea Warriors pounded 12 hits to win going away.
Snow was the only 'Runners to hit safely in all three games Friday, finishing the day 4-for-10 with four runs scored. Bailey went also went 4-for-10, including a 3-for-4 effort vs. Western Washington.
Bakersfield continues pool play Saturday when it faces Grand Canyon at 9 a.m. and Central Washington at 12:15 p.m. Championship bracket play begins on Sunday.
