SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF. – The Cal State Bakersfield softball team continued its month–long road trip Saturday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader at Cal State San Bernardino. The Roadrunners took game one 6–2 but fell 3–0 in the nightcap.
Senior pitcher Kristyn Daniels (West Torrance HS) fanned five batters in the first game, improving to 9–4 with the complete game victory. The Roadrunner offense pounded out 12 hits in support of Daniels, scoring three runs in both the second and sixth innings.
San Bernardino (14-12, 6-8 CCAA) starter Tawni Baker was in complete control in game two. She scattered five hits and allowed just one runner as far as second base. Her offense gave her all the support she would need in the first inning, parlaying two slow rollers up the middle and a stolen base into the game–winning run.
The Bakersfield (12-11, 9-7) freshman pitching tandem of Katie Chavez (Fresno/Edison HS) and Shawna Truan (McArthur/Fall River HS), also pitched well, combining to allow just seven hits and one earned run while striking out six Coyotes in the nightcap, but it wasn't enough to prevent Chavez from picking up her first collegiate loss.
Offensively, all 17 Roadrunner hits were singles Saturday. Hilary Taylor (San Jose/Santa Teresa HS) led the way with two hits in both games. Perhaps the brightest offensive note came from senior shortstop Kianna Urbanski (Lancaster HS), who broke out of a recent slump by going 3-for-7 in the doubleheader.
The Roadrunners will continue their extended road trip next weekend when they play four games at Cal State Stanislaus. They will kick off the series with a doubleheader Friday beginning at 1 p.m.
