Spartans Rally In Second Half For 78-63 Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? For 22 and one-half minutes, the CSUB men's basketball team seemed well on its way to its second victory of the season. But San Jose State got hot just as Bakersfield went cold, and the result was a dramatic turnaround as the Spartans pulled away for a 78?63 victory at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.

It was the first time in 26 years that CSUB and San Jose met on the basketball court. And from the opening tip until three minutes into the second half, it looked as if the Roadrunners were going to make it two consecutive wins against their Bay area rivals.

Zack Grasmick (Strathmore/Granite Hills HS) knocked down a short jumper to give CSUB its biggest lead of the game at 43?35 2:34 into the second half. But the tables turned on the next possession when C.J. Webster tipped in a fourth?chance basket for the Spartans.

Webster's putback began a 24?7 burst for San Jose that turned the eight?point deficit into a nine?point, 59?50 lead inside of 10 minutes to play.

San Jose's big rally had two components: Hot shooting by the Spartans and the opposite from Bakersfield. San Jose shot 59 percent (17-of-29) in the second half while the 'Runners went cold, hitting just 36 percent (12-of-33) from the field.

The Spartans did their damage by attacking the basket, slashing to the rim to score 26 of their 45 second?half points in the paint while drawing 15 freethrow opportunities in the period. CSUB had its share of good looks, but hit just 1-of-9 from beyond the arc and shot just four free throws in the period.

Junior forward Santwon Latunde (Landover, Md.) led Bakersfield with his first double?double of the season, scoring a game?high 18 points to go along with a season?high 11 rebounds. Junior swingman Terrence Johns (Chicago/Bakersfield College) chipped in 17 point.

Tim Pierce led a balanced San Jose offense with 17 points, including 5-of-7 shooting from three?point range. Webster added a 10?point, 13?rebound double?double.

Bakersfield (1?6 overall) will face another tough opponent when it returns to the Rabobank Arena floor to host perennial NCAA Tournament participant Utah State Dec. 8. San Jose (3?1) concludes its season?opening five?game road trip at the University of San Diego Wednesday night.
